Oakenshaw is a family-run boarding kennels and cattery, with all members of our family living on site to provide round-the-clock care and added security. Set within 16 acres of fully secure land, the premises benefit from controlled access (one entrance and one exit), CCTV monitoring, and 8-foot electric security gates.

 

We have proudly owned and operated Oakenshaw since 2014, during which time we have developed a reputation as one of the leading providers of dog and cat care in the Wakefield area. Our commitment to high standards has led to customers travelling to us from across the region, including Manchester and Newcastle.

Daily Routine

 

 

Our day begins at approximately 6:00am, when all kennels and cattery areas are thoroughly cleaned. This is followed by breakfast for all animals in our care, after which additional cleaning is completed.

 

Dogs then enjoy their first walk of the day, lasting around 30 minutes. For safety reasons, dogs are never mixed unless they are from the same household.

 

Between 12:00 noon and 3:00pm, each member of staff takes a dog either into our secure off-lead exercise areas or for a walk around the grounds. We have numerous shaded areas, providing comfort during warmer months while remaining suitable throughout the winter.

 

Evening meals are served between 4:30pm and 5:00pm, followed by a full clean of the kennels and the dogs’ final walk of the day. Lights are typically turned off between 7:00pm and 8:00pm. As we live on site, there is always someone present well into the evening to monitor and care for the animals.

 

Our reception is closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays, allowing our full attention to remain on the pets in our care rather than phone calls and emails.

 

All cats and dogs receive regular human interaction throughout the day. Where appropriate and with owner consent, our children also spend time with child-friendly pets, providing positive socialisation in a calm family environment. Oakenshaw is truly a family affair.

Our Facilities

 

 

We offer a range of spacious kennels with pleasant views of surrounding woodland. The main boarding block overlooks our paddock, home to our horses, donkeys, and two pygmy goats, which many dogs find both relaxing and mentally stimulating, along with the other wildlife on site.

 

All kennels and catteries are fully covered and include both a covered outdoor area and a heated indoor area. Heating is automatic and included in the price.

 

We provide everything your pet needs during their stay; owners are only required to supply specialist diets or medication, if applicable.

Please note that medication administration and behavioural needs (which must be discussed prior to booking) incur an additional care charge of £3 per day.
